Directed by Fred Opperdoes with the help of Paul Michels, this unit investigates parasitic protozoa of the group of trypanosomes, which cause diseases such as sleeping sickness (which prevails in Africa), Chagas disease (widespread in Latin America) and leishmaniases (endemic in many tropical regions). The aim of the unit is to exploit cellular and metabolic differences between the parasite and the human host in order to develop more efficient treatments against these diseases. To this end, it uses all the resources of biochemistry, protein biophysics, molecular biology, and molecular modelling. |
