COST Action B22 on "Drug development for parasitic diseases"

2003-2007

History of the Proposal

The presentation of this new COST Action is made on behalf of scientists representing several COST countries members who met through COST Action B9 "Chemotherapy of Protozoal Infections" that is due to end in September 2002. A Report of the activities of COST B9 including a list of papers published by MC members in 1996-2002 is available. Click here to download the report as a PDF file

The aims of the previous COST Action B9 were to develop links between experts in EU countries. The Working Groups on Drugs, on Chemistry and on Drug Screening sought to identify active research groups, organise Workshops and Expert Meetings on cross-disciplinary themes, establish collaborative links between academic groups, critically review biochemical targets, explore contacts with the pharmaceutical industry, and engender a European identity in anti-protozoal drug discovery. The new COST proposal will exploit the identified expertise and link groups in academia and industry together along the established drug development structure "from molecules to man". The proposed COST Action is structured into Working Groups on Genomics and Target identification, Target Characterisation and Drug Design, Drug Evaluation, Pre-clinical Development and Drug Resistance. Extensive contacts between academic scientists and SME and large pharmaceutical companies in Europe that have re-engaged in anti-parasitic drug development will be developed bringing scientists from industry into the activities. Hence, the new COST will differ from COST B9 in aims, structure and extent of activities.
